I am using Lync 2010 to access an Office Communications Server 2007 server and received the above error. In general Greg Olsen’s blog post helped me, but my registry entry was slightly different. Might be a configuration thing with the environment we have here…
Instead of:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Communicator
I had to use:
HKU > S-1-5-21-[more long code here] > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Communicator
I discovered this by using the Windows Process Monitor and tracking what registry key it was looking for. A quick search for DisableServerCheck in the monitor found the appropriate key.

Hi Sorin,
Main changes are UI and integration with Office 2010. The best list is on technet as it has all the new features.
