Fixing User Profile Synchronisation Event ID 6801 for SharePoint 2010

There are a number of reasons why synchronisation can fail, but this one involved the Forefront identity Management Management Agent for synchronisation being configured to look at a URL that SharePoint wasn’t responding too…

The URL for my SharePoint management agent (which uses the extensible connectivity interface) was pointing to direct://

however this Central Admin site didn’t have Alternate Access Mappings configured. So I manually changed the address to:

(i.e. removed the fully qualified name) and this fixed my sync issues! So you can either choose this method or (probably better) add an Alternate Access Mapping for your CA server.
