Fixing User Profile Synchronisation Event ID 6801 for SharePoint 2010

There are a number of reasons why synchronisation can fail, but this one involved the Forefront identity Management Management Agent for synchronisation being configured to look at a URL that SharePoint wasn’t responding too…

The URL for my SharePoint management agent (which uses the extensible connectivity interface) was pointing to direct://server.my.domain.local:1234/_vti_bin/ProfileImportExportService.asmx?ApplicationID=db07cdca%2Dd40b%2D477d%2Db2e9%2D87cbb847684d

however this Central Admin site didn’t have Alternate Access Mappings configured. So I manually changed the address to:
direct://server:1234/_vti_bin/ProfileImportExportService.asmx?ApplicationID=db07cdca%2Dd40b%2D477d%2Db2e9%2D87cbb847684d

(i.e. removed the fully qualified name) and this fixed my sync issues! So you can either choose this method or (probably better) add an Alternate Access Mapping for your CA server.
