SharePoint 2013 Office Web Apps – Permission to edit this notebook error

On a SharePoint 2013 development farm I wanted to configure a new host-header site collection. An existing site collection was already configured in the farm, Office Web Apps was connected to the farm, and it was successfully working with the existing environment.

The new site collection was created as a host-header site using New-SPSite -hostheaderwebapp, but when I clicked on the “Notebook” link on my new team site, I got a popup-error (as opposed to a Correlation ID error) of:

Sorry, you don’t have permission to edit this notebook.

For Word documents I got the popup-error:

Sorry, there was a problem and we can’t open this document. If this happens again, try opening the document in Microsoft Word.

For Excel I actually got a configuration error there was:

Server Error in ‘/x’ Application.

and for Powerpoint there was:

Sorry, we ran into a problem. Please try again.

I thought it might have been something to do with OfficeWeb apps licensing permissions, but the actual problem was DNS. The OfficeWebApp server(s) need to be able to resolve the URL to the SharePoint server(s). We added an “A” record added in DNS that pointed to the SharePoint web server address.

For me this worked within about a minute, but other farms I have had to wait quite a while before it seemed to be happy. Could be a timer job running in the background to update the configuration, or caching perhaps. But this solution seems to work for now!
