HOWTO: Diagnose SharePoint 2013 On-Premise App Deployment Errors

I have been developing a simple App to deploy to my SharePoint 2013 environment to add a button to the Ribbon. I had issues with the deployment where after uploading my App the “Valid App Package” column would be “No”. Not very useful.

After digging through the ULS logs, I found the category to look for is “App Marketplace”. After finding the entries the error I was getting was related to starting the CommandAction with a relative page link which is not allowed. The exact error was:

Unexpected exception: There were errors when validating the App package: There were errors when validating the App Package. Other warnings / errors associated with this exception: Custom action urls must start with “http:”, “https:”, “~appWebUrl” or “~remoteAppUrl”.

After changing the CommandAction to a fully-qualified URL (http://my.sharepoint.site/Pages/DoSomething.aspx) the App was validated successfully.
